# What are the types of wall paint? | Time Paints

Wall paints fall into two primary categories based on their binder and solvent system. Water-based paints — also called plastic paints — use acrylic emulsions as the binder and water as the carrier. They dry quickly (typically 1–2 hours to touch-dry), produce low odour, are environmentally cleaner, and are easy to clean up with water. Modern acrylic formulations match or exceed the durability of older oil-based products. Oil-based paints use alkyd resins as the binder and mineral spirits or thinner as the solvent. They produce a harder, smoother film with excellent levelling properties and strong adhesion on bare metal and wood. Drying time is longer — typically 6–8 hours — and the strong odour requires ventilation during application. Beyond these two families, specialised types include anti-bacterial paints, VOC-free formulations, textured decorative effect paints, heat-resistant coatings, and epoxy-based products for industrial surfaces.
