# What type of paint is used for wood? | Time Paints

Wood surfaces require a different approach to painting than walls, depending on whether the goal is to preserve the natural grain or to cover it with a solid colour. For a natural wood appearance, a penetrating wood stain is the standard choice — it absorbs into the wood fibres, adds colour and depth, and does not form an opaque film on the surface. This is suitable for interior furniture, doors, window frames, and decorative wood panels. For a solid-colour finish that conceals the grain, an alkyd or acrylic enamel paint is applied after priming with a wood primer. The primer seals the porous surface and prevents tannins from bleeding through the topcoat. For exterior wood exposed to sun and rain, choose a product with UV stabilisers and moisture resistance. Proper surface preparation — sanding, cleaning, and drying — determines the adhesion quality more than the paint choice itself.
