Metal primer is a specialised undercoat applied to bare metal before painting. Its primary purpose is corrosion prevention: steel and iron rust when moisture and oxygen reach bare metal, and metal primer forms a barrier that keeps them out. Standard wall primers do not bond well to bare metal and provide no rust protection, which is why using the wrong primer on metal is one of the most common causes of paint failure on gates, railings, window frames, and structural steelwork.

You need it on any bare, sanded, or newly welded iron or steel surface before applying a topcoat. It is also applied after removing rust and cleaning back to bare metal — because the topcoat alone provides no chemical protection to the exposed metal beneath.

Aluminium and galvanised steel need a different approach: a self-etching or bonding primer designed for non-ferrous metals, since standard iron primers may not adhere correctly to these surfaces and the coating can fail early.

Most metal primers contain corrosion-inhibiting pigments — typically red oxide or zinc phosphate — that protect the metal chemically even if the topcoat is later scratched. Clean and degrease the surface thoroughly before priming; primer cannot bond over contamination and any skipped preparation will show up as rust or peeling.
