Paint types fall into two main families: water-based and solvent-based. Within each family there are several product types suited to different surfaces and purposes.

Water-based paints (emulsions, acrylics) are the most commonly used for interior and exterior walls. They dry quickly, have low odour, and clean up with water. They are available in finishes from matte to semi-gloss, and exterior acrylic formulations are designed to resist UV, rain, and temperature change.

Solvent-based alkyd paints are used where a harder, more durable surface is needed — doors, window frames, metal railings, and exterior trim. They dry more slowly and have a stronger odour but produce a tough, abrasion-resistant film. Nitrocellulose (naari) paint is also solvent-based but dries through rapid solvent evaporation; it is used mainly in furniture workshops and on decorative interior metalwork where fast turnaround matters.

Epoxy paints form a chemically resistant, extremely hard surface and are used on floors, workshops, and surfaces facing heavy use or chemical exposure. They are two-component products mixed before application. Waterproofing coatings form a flexible membrane that prevents water penetration and are used on exposed roofs, terraces, and wet rooms.

Primer is not a paint type — it is a preparatory coating that helps topcoats bond, seals surfaces, and prevents problems. Each paint type has its matching primer, and skipping it on new or bare surfaces is the most common cause of early paint failure.
