Waterproof paint, also called elastomeric or waterproofing coating, forms a continuous flexible membrane that stops water from penetrating a surface. Unlike standard exterior paint, which slows moisture absorption without stopping it, waterproofing coatings stay flexible and can bridge hairline cracks that open and close with temperature change.

It is used most commonly on flat roofs and open terraces, where standing water, thermal expansion, and direct sun all attack the surface. A waterproofing membrane keeps moisture out of the building structure and must be flexible enough to move with the surface without cracking.

It is also used in bathrooms and wet rooms — on walls and floors around showers, baths, and toilet areas — applied either under tiles or as a direct finish in some designs. The same applies to kitchen floors and service areas where constant spillage and cleaning demand a surface that truly seals.

Below-ground and retaining walls exposed to soil moisture also benefit from waterproofing coatings, using the appropriate system for that type of exposure. Swimming pools and water tanks are a separate category; they require specialist systems, not standard waterproof paint.

A good waterproofing coating should be elastomeric (stretches and recovers without cracking), UV-stable if used externally, and rated for the water exposure level of the surface.
